Ready to spin Web 2.0?
Tim O’Reilly, founder of O’Reilly Media coined the term Web 2.0 to describe scalable services leveraging on the collaboration of users as co-developers of collective intelligence. However, Tim Berners-Lee, World Wide Web inventor and Chair of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory argues that he originally envisioned a participatory web and not the static web – the precursor of what is now referred to as Web 2.0. So much for the polemics. The web has evolved from the mere communication medium of the 1990s into a dynamic collaboration medium for the increasingly enriching user experience of today. BCPL’s mission statement promises to “provide innovative, quality services responding to the needs of our diverse community…” Our customers are no longer solely the patrons of brick and mortar libraries of yesteryears but now include an exponentially growing population of technology savvy potential contributors to our collective business intelligence. Let us leverage on the capabilities of Web 2.0 in responding to the needs of our diverse community. Is that Library 2.0 or what?
